Lament of the Harpy

12”x 18” Oil on Linen 2024

The Harpy has been depicted in mythology as half-human, half-bird, sometimes as a gruesome creature and sometimes as a beautiful seductive winged woman.  They were wind spirits; the personification of the destructive nature of storm winds.

As the ‘hounds of Zeus’ they were also instruments of the divine; plucking mortals from the earth and sea, causing chaos in their wake. - they were monsters

Depicted here is the Harpy who no longer wants to kill and be used for evil.  She is rallying against her nature, what she was born to be, and hides her face in disgust of what she is.

With this image I wish to inspire any person who feels out of place in the body they were born into, who has the will power to fight their nature and be transformed into the beautiful creature they envision for themselves.
